Overview of the Discussion:
This discussion panel will focus on the artists featured in the exhibition, who are all Brooklyn based, and art organizations that promote artistic development of the community, as we will attempt to go deeper into the theme of the exhibition and explore the artists’ creative process. The purpose of the panel is to discuss how artists can use their creative talents to inspire change: socially, politically, community, and personally. What effect does art have on the community? Why should we encourage art in the public school systems and in the inner-city?
About the “Live to Change Something Through Art” Exhibit:
This exhibit features work that is reflective of the current Brooklyn arts movement and underscores Coup d’etat’s thought-provoking brand principle, “Live to Change Something.” Highlighting a multicultural collective of artists across several disciplines, the exhibition encompasses painting, photography, and sculpture.
The title of this post is not to be confused with sister Sallome Hralima & Jamel Shabbazz’s photo-documentary event last year, June 8th, 2008 (see: AGreatDayInBroolyn.org). I am referring to NYC experiencing Summertime in April. For those of you who may not know- there is no place like Brooklyn in the Summer. We were able to capture some of our outtings to share with YOU (our blog followers), which included hanging out with the Fam – CDTBK/Sunshowah, Renae of InHerShoesBlog, & Alice Smith; A roof-top BBQ; Hard Hitting Harry & The Earthman Experience performing at the Earth Day Festival; and more!
Come see our short film, Shades of Brooklyn Vol. 1 screening as a part of Pete Chatmon (Double 7 Films) and Forrest Renaissance’s (Party Rebel) SHORT SHORTS Episode 6: The Best of the Best Edition. TheCoup has come to realize, over the years, that one of the best ways of utilizing knowledge is to give it away. This principle inspired the “Teach The Babies” concept. It’s our duty as qualified people to share what we know with the youth, in hopes of inspiring and motivating a greater reality.
Our brother Netic of Game Rebellion suggested that we join him in a Panel discussion with a student organization at Suny Purchase; his alma mater.
Panel Subject: How does alternative art forms such as music (particularly Rock -N-roll), film, the Internet and fashion brands use their content to create forms of resistance and convey positive statements?
Some of the points the panelist touched on were:
- Sharing our experiences as artists and using our art to express our ideals
- How we market ourselves to the public.
- The DIY strategy: Do It Yourself (Guerrilla Marketing)
- Combining business with your talent – How to capitalize off of your artistic expression?
- Collaborating and supporting your peers.
- Sharing our stories of pitfalls and success.
The students were very responsive and appreciative in our exchange. Due to time restrictions, we were subjected to about an hour of discussion. However, we took the discussion out into the streets and was able to build with them more effectively.
