“The shepherd drives the wolf from the sheep’s throat, for which the sheep thanks the shepherd as his liberator, while the wolf denounces him for the same act, as the destroyer of liberty. Plainly the sheep and the wolf are not agreed upon a definition of the word liberty; and precisely the same difference prevails today among human creatures.” -Ab Lincoln
The word “rap” is defined in the Oxford American Dictionary as:a type of popular music of U.S. black origin in which words are recited rapidly and rhythmically over a prerecorded, typically, electronic instrumental backing.
Ever wonder why rap or Hip Hop culture isn’t being taken seriously or solely used as marketing tactics to undermine that it’s really TRANSFORMING into a form of urban exploitation? Apparently someone who’s educated and is being paid for “using their brain” thinks RAP is all about talking fast over some pre-recorded beat. If all Rap is, is some dude placing a poetic group of words, rapping “rapidly” over an “electronic instrumental backing,” than what is the culture about? Continue reading “Your Tools Of FREEDOM…” »
“If there’s a movement that we stand for, it’s about breaking down barriers.” D.A. Wallach of Chester French, HopHipDX.com (2007)
NUMBER 1: CHESTER FRENCH
Need new, quality music? Good. Let me introduce D.A. and Max of the unclassified duo, Chester French. Chester French is a tag team straight from the hallways of Harvard University. With the skill, experience and talent that reflects musical fusions and universally dope sounds, the StarTrak duo is debuting their first album, Love the Future this upcoming April. In the words of Rah Digga, they are “lyrically inclined and inclined to be lyrical.” Check out my 2007 piece on the group by clicking HERE. Click HERE to see their new video, “She Loves Everybody.” I’m sure you’ll love it. Also be on the lookout for their upcoming Mixtape, Jacques Jams, Vol. 1: Endurance featuring Janelle Monae and Talib Kweli. Continue reading “New Music: Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs, Chester French And M. Lately, its been difficult to listen or watch hip hop videos due to the lack of creativity, lack of substantial content, and redundancy through the propetuation of the same ignorant stereotypes. On the flipside, it is always refreshing to hear something fresh, new and creative. Phase One is the latter. I’ve known Phase for some years now - this brother works with a lot of positive energy. I’ve seen him perform live a few times and his stage shows are pretty energetic; but now he’s added a dope video to his resume.
The Video below is from his latest single called “Round & Round.” J Dilla inspired vibe, produced by Asa Buchannon, Directed by Mills Miller, and featuring cameos from the coup family members: Sha Divine & M. Island. Check it out

He’s rocking out tonight at Smitty’s in the Bronx. He went on vacation recently and as you can see, he rode a horse- with sneakers on. ::Laughs:: If you’ve ever thought of a vacation spot, start with the Dominican Republic and if you ever thought about a dope show, peep M. Island. In the words of M. Island, “Freelaxin” is a gift we sometimes have to give ourselves. Sometimes, we need to get away from the rush, the Blackberry’s and the emails. It’s cool to TREAT YOURSELF. Peep a brief video of his time spent in the DR and some of his exclusive photos. Also, check for him in the Bronx, TONIGHT.
